Alternator

What is an alternator?

An alternator is in motion the moment the engine is running and doesn’t stop until it’s switched off. The alternator helps maintain the battery’s power level and performance output. Alternators are the core of every vehicle’s electrical system, including marine vessels, cars, and agricultural and construction machinery, just to mention a few.

It is the alternator that powers all the electrical components when the engine is running. A bad alternator can cause a host of problems throughout the entire electrical system, especially on modern vehicles loaded with technology.

Have you experienced any of these problems?

  • Dimming headlights or dashboard lights
  • Flickering dashboard lights
  • Slow engine start
  • Slow car accessories (sunroofs, electric windows etc.)

This probably indicates that your alternator is due for maintenance or replacement. Not sure? Contact our consultant here.

How does it work?

So how do alternators really work? They generate electricity by converting rotational mechanical energy into electrical energy, an alternating current output (generally referred to as AC). This is why it’s called an ‘alternator’. DC generators were used in cars in the past, but since AC has many benefits compared to DC (which stands for Direct Current), alternators are now used in modern vehicles and high-power applications.

Quick fact: do you know who invented AC power? – Nikola Tesla

When the engine is running the alternator powers all the electrical components. It does this through electromagnetic induction. In a car, the alternator is attached to the engine and is driven by a drive belt, also called the serpentine belt.

In which industries are alternators used?

Alternators are used in several industries that require high power density. At BermanTec we supply top of the range alternators for demanding applications in mining, construction, agriculture, marine and emergency vehicles. Some of our most sought-after alternators include the Delco Remy alternators, the Delstar alternators, the Nippon Denso alternators and the Prestolite alternators.
