Bermantec October Digest 2024: Optimizing Train Performance Globally
Dear customer,
In the world of rail transportation, powerful engines are the heart of locomotive performance, and keeping them running efficiently is key. In this month’s BermanTec update, we want to highlight our starter & alternator catalogue for the railway industry – by focussing on some of the world’s largest train builders that we supply. Interested in what we can offer your company? Contact us here.
Whether it’s a high-speed passenger train or a freight locomotive, engines from renowned manufacturers like MTU, Cummins, MAN, and Caterpillar are critical for delivering the power and durability needed for rail travel. However, without reliable electrical components such as starters and alternators, even the most robust engines can face performance issues.
At BermanTec, we specialize in supplying high-performance alternators & starters, ensuring long-lasting, low-maintenance power solutions for trains worldwide. You can find our catalogue for trains here.
MTU, a division of Rolls-Royce, is one of the most widely used engine brands in European locomotives. MTU’s engines, particularly their 1500 and 1600 series, are renowned for their reliability and power, making them a preferred choice for manufacturers like Alstom, Bombardier, and PESA.
For MTU-powered trains, we offer our Brushless Delstar Alternators—built to handle the high demands of these engines. For instance, our 100-18264E (Insulated, Brushless, T1 mount, left mounting 60°) and 100-18262E (Insulated, Brushless, T1 mount, right mounting 60°) (both 24V – 250A) models are engineered to deliver consistent power output, ensuring that locomotives remain operational under heavy loads and challenging environments. These 24V Delstar alternators have a much higher output in comparison to Bosch T1 alternators (with only 140A).
Part of the Prestolite starters series are the M128R3623SER and M128R3824SER models, both rated at 24V and 10kW. These reliable starters are in stock and widely used in MTU trains. Another popular choice is our M105R3095SE model, which continues to perform exceptionally well in demanding applications.
And with over 75% of Europe’s rail network powered by electric or hybrid systems, pairing MTU engines with reliable alternators and starters is essential for reducing downtime and enhancing overall efficiency.
Cummins engines are a global standard for heavy-duty locomotives, used all over the world, from the U.S. to Europe and Africa. Known for their rugged design, engines like the Cummins KTA38 and QSK19 provide power to locomotives produced by manufacturers such as ONCF (Morocco) and TZV Gredelj (Croatia).
Our range of 24V Delstar Alternators, BOSCH/SEG Starters and Prestolite MS7 starter-series are ideal for Cummins-powered locomotives. The SEG starter 0001615002 (24V – 18kW) is an often-requested model with high output. The MS7-417A is commonly used on Cummins QSK19 engines that drive Class 180 trains in the UK. As Cummins engines are frequently employed in freight and long-haul applications, having a dependable starter like our Prestolite M128R3840SET 24V – 12kW ensures sustained power output for extended periods of operation.
German manufacturer MAN supplies engines for locomotives across Europe. Their D2876 and D2842 engines are particularly prominent in rail applications, with companies like PESA in Poland and Remarul in Romania using MAN engines to drive locomotives that serve both passenger and freight operations.
To match the power and efficiency of MAN engines, we offer a range of alternators specifically designed to optimize electrical output and reduce maintenance needs. The Delstar Brushless Alternator, such as the 100-25208 (24V – 330A) and the 100-25210D (24V – 320A) have been field-tested in European conditions, providing high efficiency even in the most demanding rail environments. Whether it’s for refurbishments or new builds, our alternators ensure MAN-powered locomotives deliver reliable performance.
Caterpillar engines are known for their heavy-duty applications, and they are often found in specialized locomotives produced by companies like CZ LOKO and Windhoff. Caterpillar’s C175 and 3512B engines are highly regarded for their ability to handle high torque and challenging terrain, making them ideal for freight and industrial rail operations.
For Caterpillar-powered locomotives, BermanTec supplies advanced alternator systems that can withstand high-load demands. Our 100-30204 (24V – 330A) and 100-30205 (24V – 400A) Delstar Alternators are well-suited for use with Caterpillar engines, offering both durability and the capacity to handle the rigors of industrial applications. In combination with our separate Delco Remy regulators (such as the OEM 3501-5025), these alternators ensure steady power supply.
Also check out our new units in our portfolio, such as the AA100-221711-265 (24V/350A) or AA105-221715-242 (24V /450A) models, which can be reliable and durable alternatives.
