Alternators draw air from the rear to the front to cool the internal electronics. Naturally this airflow causes dust to enter the alternator. To avoid dust hanging up brushes and breaking down the alternator brushless versions have been designed. These brushless alternators have fewer moving parts, which means less alternator wear.
All major internal components that carry current, such as a field coil, regulator, bridge, connectors and stator, are stationary components and are more resistant to vibration and dirt. All this increases the durability and reliability under tough conditions. Which simply means: a longer lifespan.
